The Humble Independent School District hosts a literary festival every winter. Every year they alternate between chlidrens's literature and a teen literature event. The festival features nationally acclaimed authors and draws hundreds of families to the event. This year, there will not be a festival because of events that folllowed the banning of best selling young adult author Ellen Hopkins. Auhorities have been trying to ban books as long as people have been writing them. "Banning authors isn't the same as banning books, but the intent is the same," says Hopkins. When the parents found out that Hopkins was a speaker at this year's fesival, many of them complained to the school board and her invitation was taken back. Hopkins talked to the other writers who were supposed to speak a the festival and they all withdrew from the festival. The school district then cancelled the festival. Banning Hopkins from the festival and the other authors boycotting caused a lot of activity on social network sites. Six national industry groups sent protest letters to the superintendent. Some people said that Hopkins hadn't really been formally invited and was making a big deal out of nothing.
Do you think it was fair for the school to cancel Ellen Hopkins appearance?

China annouced today that they will not be dropping the one child policy, which has been in affect for thirty years. It has been estimated that this policy has prevented four hundred millon births. Some people have urged China to relax this policy. This is partly because the rule makes the population skewed towards older people. Since the measure limits a couple to have only one child, girls tend to be not wanted. This is why thousands of chinese girls are being put up for adoption by foreigners. Some people, who live in the rural area and both are only children can sometimes have more than one child.
Do you think it is fair that goverment limits a couple to only one child?

Should the cars be made in America so Americans can have jobs here?

On Thursday Mexican mayors held a meeting in the United States for the first time, though it didn't draw any interest to any U.S. counterparts. They discussed illegal immigration and environment to economic growth. Only one of the United States mayor came,Jerry Sanders of San Diego , because his state was hosting. He later left after the welcoming remarks. The meeting was orignally scheduled in Ciudad Juarez, Meixco, but was then changed to the location of San Diego. The mayors disagreed that violence in Juarez, across from El Paso, Texas, influenced the change. They said that Sanders offered and they excepted. Four Mexican mayors came, when they were expecting there to be 12. The mayors from Mexico wanted the U.S. goverment to send more money to fight drug trafficking. They also asked to try to have an effort to fly the deported illegal immigrants to their hometowns, instead of returning them to cities on the border. Tijuana mayor Jorge Ramos said he wanted Juarez Mayor- elect Hector Murguia to work closely with the Mexican police of the 2,500 that were under his watch. Nuevo Laredo Mayor Ramon Garza said that the police officers should be more focused with small crimes, because everyone starts out small. Then they move to orgainzed crime.
Do you think it was okay for only Jerry Sanders of San Diego to be there to represent the United States?

A women named Farrah has been charged for the dealth of two children, after locking them and three other children in a closet. The woman locked them in the closet while she went and visited a neighbor. It was said that she left around 6 am, putting a bed in front of the door blocking a way out. She returned about 10 and half hours later. When she opened the closet to let the kids out, she noticed that 2 of the 5 kids were unresponsive and stiff. She carried them down to the couch, though she never called 911 or tried to get any help. Her friends became concerned after she started acting strange and wouldn't let anyone into her apartment. One of her friends called Farrah's uncle down to the complex to come check out the situation. When he looked into the open door he saw two dead kids laying on the couch. When the uncle tried to call 911, the mother grabbed the phone and threw it. When the police arrived, the two kids were in full rigor mortis. The mother told police she was not in her right mind.
Do you think the mother not being in her right mind is a good enough excuse to kill her kids?
